Manager Accountability: Clear Expectations and Follow-Through

Accountability fails when clear expectations are vague and follow-through management is optional. Accountability is more than just a cultural value or employee attitude; it is also a crucial management practice. When expectations are unclear, ownership is assumed, and missed commitments receive inconsistent responses, the organization conveys the message that follow-through is negotiable. Telling people to “take ownership” is not an effective accountability system. Managers must know how to: 

- Define an observable outcome  

- Explain why it matters  

- Confirm ownership and timing  

- Surface obstacles early  

- Address missed commitments promptly  

- Distinguish explanation from avoidance  

- Follow through fairly and consistently  

What should change? Managers should set clearer expectations, confirm understanding, identify owners and deadlines, address misses sooner, and stop repeatedly rescuing work they assigned to others.
